The Challenge
A business reached out to Higgens Media after discovering that its WordPress website was no longer displaying correctly. The navigation had disappeared, the design had reverted to what appeared to be a basic template, and much of the content was difficult for visitors to find.
The cause wasn't clear. There was no obvious indication of a security breach, but something had gone wrong with the website's WordPress installation, theme, or plugins.
The business contacted its hosting provider, hoping the website could simply be restored to an earlier version. Instead, they were advised to put up an under-construction page and rebuild the site themselves.
There was no usable backup available to restore the website.
That's when they contacted Higgens Media.
Our Approach
First, Keep the Website Online
Our first recommendation was not to replace the broken website with an under-construction page.
Although the design and navigation were a mess, much of the original content was still accessible. Taking everything offline would remove that content from public view and potentially affect the website's visibility in search engines.
Instead, we worked to stabilize the existing site while developing a replacement in a separate WordPress environment.
This approach allowed us to focus on recovery without unnecessarily removing the business's existing content from the web.
Reconstructing What Was Lost
Recovering the website wasn't as simple as copying the existing pages. The WordPress installation contained outdated, unused, and default pages mixed in with the business's actual content.
We turned to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to see how the website had looked before the problems began.
Using archived versions of the site, we reconstructed its navigation, page structure, and much of the original copy.
Because archived pages had been captured at different points in time, we worked directly with the client to verify the information and make sure outdated details weren't carried over to the recovered website.
A Fresh WordPress Environment
Rather than continuing to work within the damaged installation, we built the recovered website in a fresh WordPress environment on Higgens Media's hosting infrastructure.
This gave the business a more stable foundation while allowing us to restore the navigation, content, and functionality visitors expected.
The Results
Within one week, the website was restored and running on Higgens Media's servers.
The business once again had a functional website with its navigation and content restored, without having to start from scratch.
Just as importantly, we avoided unnecessarily replacing the existing website with an under-construction page while recovery was underway.
The client also gained something they hadn't expected to need: a more proactive approach to website maintenance.
Beyond the Recovery
Following the restoration, the business moved to Higgens Media's ongoing WordPress hosting and maintenance service.
Their website now benefits from automated backups and ongoing plugin updates, helping reduce the risk of another situation where a website problem turns into a complete rebuild.
We also provided basic WordPress training so the client could manage everyday content updates independently while leaving the technical maintenance to Higgens Media.
What began as an emergency website recovery became an ongoing relationship focused on keeping the website reliable, maintainable, and easier for the client to manage.
